Clunky

Meaning is solid, heavy, and old-fashioned or clumsy in style, form, or execution

Synonyms are cranky and cumbersome

Example:- Instead of a loud, clunky vacuum with a cord that gets tangled and limits its area of use, Dyson’s vacuums are sleek, almost all cordless, and long-lasting.

Are you wondering why my post today sounds like a dictionary? Because one of our clients tried to explain this word to us as the user experience (UX) of their participants. He also described the use of our software with the following words. Difficult, Not Intuitive, Not easy to use, User Experience need a lot of improvement, User Interface is not of 21st Century, Software is not easy to follow, etc

During the meeting, we showed them the User Interface of one of our other clients who are using our product. They loved it the energy changed to 180 degrees. They request if they can make it happen for their initiative.

Unhappy and frustrated clients will express their emotions to you because they want to serve their clients with high standards. It’s a great opportunity because the value they want to build is a good reputation and great service. Technology enables that because it could speed up the process and make it almost automated. The downside is it can breakdown and create issues like the one our client mentioned yesterday.

Do you know what user experience (UX) means?

We have been neglecting UX in our product and it has cost us heavily, currently we have to keep an operational team and support team to help our client overcome this challenge faced by our client. We don’t have a UI expert in our team. Our development team is a bit strange in that sense because we have solves some really complex problems like recovering data loss, improving page load by 50%, implementing real agile processes, working in a 4 day work week, building an open work culture by showing vulnerability to name a few.

Does our team have the skills to improve the User Interface?

The answer is resounding Yes!

You may ask me why have we neglected UI and UX? I will have to ask my team. I will ask them and put their feedback below.

  1. Yes our team definitely has. I also don’t think we do not work on the UI or UX. but still if they think its how it is we can get their view and can work on that for a betterment.
  2. I think that we can improve the UX of our product. But I’ve always felt that we need someone(or we could train a team member) who has an expertise in UX and designing intuitive UI. As you rightly said in one of our previous meeting that these days the most important factor in a software product is the UX and I also feel that this is the area where our team is the weakest(including me). I feel the reason that we have neglected the UX until now might have many factors the biggest of which is that I feel the team neglects the importance of UX and focuses more on the backend of the product.(I too am guilty of this). Personally, one of the reasons that I sometimes avoid making changes to the UI is that I’m not extremely confident in my frontend development(HTML, CSS) which stops me from working on them as it would take me more time than a normal task
  3. I think, we do work for it but the sharpness and the promptness that the user thinks, missing in our product. But really like to know more as what the user thinks so we may change our thinking and start thinking for it.
