The general school of thought is to put in more effort to gain the outcome or results. You will put back your Sundays or weekdays to complete our backlog. The people who share the idea of putting less effort are demonised, questioned or criticized. Many leaders are only measuring efforts. How many hours is my team working? They are wasting too much time on R&D. How can I squeeze every minute of my team? Why can’t they come up with 10 ideas after giving them 10 hours? Every transaction is measured in terms of efforts, hours or size.

If you can guarantee food on your table and keep the lights on for the next 6 months, don’t be a devil’s advocate to someone in your team who is taking a risk and trying a simple experiment. Be useful and show your support.

We work in the space of the knowledge industry where a small command-line DOS with 13,587 lines of code + 7 files ends up becoming the most used operating system Windows. The company becomes a giant Microsoft. I am not telling you to become one of the biggest companies in the world. I am letting you know that your love for effort and your marriage with hard work (only as an excuse to wear your scars and failure) is a disservice to society and the world in general.

Our brain is wired to resist what it perceives a hard and welcome what it perceives as easy. This bias is sometimes called the cognitive ease principle, or the principle of least effort. It’s our tendency to take the path of least resistance to achieve what we want… ….we could embrace it, even use it to our advantage? What if instead of asking, “How can I tackle this really hard but essential project?”, we simply inverted the question and asked, “What if this essential project could be made easy?”
